At Least 11,000 People Die Every Year

No matter how much we love to spend time in the sun, we still have to be sensible about it. More than 11,000 people die from melanoma (skin cancer) every year.

The ultraviolet rays (UV Rays) from the sun can cause the skin to look aged prematurely (wrinkled and leathery over time), can cause skin cancer and also affect the vision of the eyes.

There are UVA, UVB and UVC Rays from the sun. Ultraviolet Rays consist of 3 types:  A) Aging rays, whose rays are longer, they affect the collagen in the skin (negatively) and produce free radicals which damage the cells.

What are free radicals?
They are unstable compounds that attach and injure the cell structure. They are blamed for premature aging, damaging the DNA and for suppressing the body’s immune system.

UVB rays are shorter, more intense and cause redness and burning. UVB can be good in small doses because they help the skin to produce Vitamin D but too much exposure to UVB rays can damage collagen and harm the DNA in the cells.

We never hear about UVC rays. They do exist but they usually don’t reach the earth’s surface.

Try to use a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays- called broad spectrum. Most only concentrate on screening out UVB rays.

I prefer one that is of the Mineral variety. It goes on white but does not penetrate the skin, therefore does not interrupt your hormonal system.

Remember :

1- Wear hats- the bigger and floppier the better.
2- Don’t stay in the sun during the mid-day hours, or be under an umbrella.
3- Wear sunglasses that protect against both UVA and UVB rays.
4- If you are on any medications while sunbathing, (especially the birth control pill or estrogen replacement pills) you may increase the chances of getting discoloration on the skin.
5- Eat more Vitamin C-rich foods or add vitamin C drink powder to your water bottle. A great antioxidant that will protect the skin from free radicals formed from sun exposure. Also aids in the production of collagen.
