The hula hoop has been around for thousands of years. It was popular when we were kids but we used the light-weight, plastic ones.  People are starting to use the hula hoop again but not the ones you remember from childhood.  They can now be customized and are used in many work-out places. This exercise is called “hooping.”

The craze started coming back about ten years ago.  Hooping as it is now called, is supposedly much more fun than the light-weight hula hoops we had as kids. The heavier and larger the hoop, the slower it rotates around the body.  And for that reason, anyone is able to do hooping. It doesn’t matter the size or shape of the person or if they feel athletic or coordinated at all.  The rotation around the person is slow enough that anyone, even those who think they have no rhythm can do hooping successfully and get a good workout for the whole body.

It will get your heart rate up and it helps tone muscles that might not have been used in any other way.  Similar to belly dancing, you use your abdominal muscles in hooping, which can help keep a roll of fat from forming around the abdomen.

It looks likea great way to exercise and have fun at the same time.  More and more people in the United States and around the world are hooping!
