Dieting is to select or limit the food one eats to improve one's physical condition or to lose weight.

Your diet is the type and range of food that you regularly eat. 
If a doctor puts someone on a diet, he or she makes them eat a special type or range of foods in order to improve their health.  

Diet drinks or foods have been specially produced so that they do not contain many calories. They are not considered healthy and are made up of chemicals. Many people do use them to lose weight but It is not something you should do to lose weight. You may lose muscle and by not dieting in a healthy way, the weight will come right back. This is referred to as yo-yo dieting.
